Rushden & Diamonds Youth Team beat Birmingham City Whites in the Football Conference Youth Alliance - League Cup Third Round, with goals from Jake Gillingwater (2) and Liam Read.
Head of Youth Paul Driver commented "We were 3-0 up just inside the second half, for the first 50 minutes we did ok. It was a good tough game, Birmingham are a useful side. It was a cold day and the pitch is a bit bobbly at this time of year, so it was never going to be pretty, but a very competitive game.
That puts us into the last 8 of a National Competition.
We've not had a great deal of games recently, last week we won 6-0, that wasn't a contest, so it's the first tough competitive game we've had for a while. We've tweaked our formation a little bit, people are learning something new, so I'm happy with that, but not so happy with decision making on the ball at times during the game.
There were some good performances in there, George Cox was outstanding, Lewis Hallford put some good crosses in, including first goal, Jake Gillingwater did well with two goals.
Birmingham will be up there at the end of the season, they are currently 4th in the League. They won the League last year and got to the League Cup final, so to beat them for the second time this year is a real positive."
The Diamonds will face Histon in the Quarter Finals after they beat Watford Hertswood 2-1 in their 3rd Round tie on Monday. The updated draw is as follows:
Boreham Wood Whites v
Hitchin Town v MMU/Newcastle
Rushden & Diamonds v Histon
