Paul Driver: Frustrating result

Posted on: Thu 05 Nov 2009

We chatted this morning to Paul Driver, following the Youth Team's exit from the FA Youth Cup sponsored by e.on

Paul, first and foremost how is Adam Sharpe doing?

He's okay, he bruised the bone, damaged some fibres and some ligaments there. He's bent his ankle back as he went to block it. It was one of those where there was a lot of pain initially, he was obviously taken to hospital as he was in a lot of pain and it could have been broken, but its a lot of ligament damage instead.

No ideas on a timeframe for his recovery this early?

No, Adam will have a couple of days off and Simon will asses that on Thursday when he's back in and we'll take it from there.

Onto the game, the performance was a spirited one from the lads

Yeah, you look at the statistics and we've revisited the video, we had over 20 shots on and off target and there were only 7 for them, so you look at it in the cold light of day and that's what games should be decided on.

We could say we were unlucky, we could say we were unfortunate, we are in many ways, Coxy's had a great save from their keeper, pushing it onto the post, Sean's unlucky being only half a yard offside, we're unlucky losing Connor at half time with a bang to the head, unlucky that we've lost Sharpey, unlucky that George Artemi was injured last week - that's unlucky.

Unlucky isn't missing cast iron chances to finish off what we had done. I would describe it as frustration at not being able to do that, I'm almost fed up at having opposition managers and coaches telling us we should have beaten them, we had that from all the Northampton coaches last night.

But that doesn't help us if we're not turning performances into wins, and that's frustrating. And I don't care if its Northampton, or Kettering or Luton - it doesn't matter who we are playing, we've got a good relationship with the boys at Northampton - so its not that I'm bothered about losing to Northampton, I'm bothered that for the second year running we aren't in the second round draw for the FA Youth Cup, particularly this year when we definitely deserved to be.

But if you only convert 1 of 21 chances and they convert 2 of 7 chances then hats off to them, good luck to them in the next round.

The decent crowd was encouraging, a lot of Centre of Excellence kids were there.

Yep it was a good night, we encouraged a lot of our Centre of Excellence boys to come down, you could hear them singing and it was a good crowd, encouraging for a youth game, we'd like to thank the supporters and the club, also the Centre of Excellence boys and their families who hopefully got the chance to see what they'll be involved in in a few years time.

Positives from the match, the good support, the spirit of the lads.

I'm particularly pleased for McDonald, he was superb, as you'd expect from Aynsley.

I thought Nabil Shariff is showing the benefits from his loan out at Newport Pagnell, he's a different player to what he was 5 or 6 weeks ago, he's now got 5 goals in 5 games, he's leading the line on his own effectively, with how we play with Sean and he's done well.

Morgan Phillips is another lad last night who we've felt has done well, he's a younger lad, playing out of position at left back, he's playing against the boy Jacobs, who has had a lot of involvement with Northampton Town's first team, while Jacob's did okay he didn't hurt Morgan.

They're three positives, also the fact that a Football League club comes to play us and they had to change their formation to deal with us, in that they moved someone in there specifically to deal with Sean in the hole. We played our way, the way we always play, I think that's a testament to where the boys are that they've done that. Its frustrating that we didn't get the result and the chance to progress in the tournament.

youth

Still games like this help the lads development a lot, we take it from there for the season now

Yeah, we'll now look to get the older boys out on loan or work experience, the younger boys will play in the League and the County Cup and with the younger lads we'll start building for next year's youth cup, with the older lads we'll start building and pushing them on as far as we can, so they can give themselves as good a chance as they can at securing a contract.
