The Youth Team welcomed Brentford back to Nene Park on Saturday for the second time in ten days, this time for a League Cup Quarter Final Match but they were unable to repeat the winning performance from the first encounter as they went down on penalties after the teams were level at 0 - 0 at the end of normal time.

In a scrappy game of few chances, the closest efforts came from Rushden with Lewis Hilliard rattling the Brentford cross bar in the first half and John Wigglesworth also striking the bar in injury time at the end of the 90 minutes.

In between, chances were few and far between with the home side's best other chance falling to Wigglesworth but he was foiled by the advancing Brentford keeper on 58 minutes.

Despite these efforts, a draw at the end of play was probably a true and fair reflection of the match so the tie needed deciding on penalties and it was the Brentford keeper who was again his team's hero in the shoot out, making saves from Jake Beecroft and Lewis Hallford and seeing Andrew Tidswell's effort go just wide. With three of the first four Brentford takers netting, it meant the visitors progressed into the semi final to meet either QPR, Colchester or Brighton.

The Diamonds Youth Team are in action today - Wednesday 27th February 2008 against Kettering Town on pitch 2 at 7:30pm in the Northamptonshire U18s Cup.
