Midfielder Lewis Hilliard is from March in Cambridgeshire and joined Rushden & Diamonds as an Under 15 player. Lewis is able to play in central or wide midfield as well as up-front and this versatility earned him a place in Reserve matches and in the Hillier Cup Squad in the 2007-08 season. He made his first team debut in the Hillier Cup when he came on as a half-time substitute against Corby Town in October 2007, and then also appeared against Cogenhoe United in the next round. He made a further appearance from the bench in September 2008 against Rothwell Town in the same competition in the 2008/09 season.
Lewis was added to the Rushden & Diamonds first team squad at the start of November 2008 making him eligible to play in the Blue Square Premier whilst at the same time remaining part of the Youth setup. He made his senior debut, aged 18, as a substitute in the FA Trophy game against Torquay United on 10th January 2009. He then made his debut in the Blue Square Premier as a substitute in the 1-0 victory over Kettering Town on 11th April 2009.
In the spring of 2009 he went on a work experience loan to Hemel Hempstead Town of the Southern League Premier, and also played in the final of the Midland Youth Cup. His performances were rewarded when he was offered a pro deal to keep him at the Diamonds once his scholarship was complete. This deal was signed shortly before the start of the 2009/10 season along with fellow graduates Jack Higgins and Joe Day.
Head of Youth Paul Driver also spoke about three of his graduates getting pro deals, saying "All three of them have displayed what you need to make the transition from the boy's game to the men's game. Hilliard and Higgins particularly have showed all of those attributes; application, physical ability, and mental ability when we put them out on loan to men's football teams at the back end of last season.
"All three went to a decent level; Joe played at Brackley, Lewis played at Hemel (that were in the same League as Corby and nearly got into the Blue Square North/South level). Billericay were at the Rymans level and they did well, that's often where good players at youth level can fail when it comes to the men's game. In the case of those three, particularly the two outfield boys, the way they kicked on towards the end of the season is why they've been given pro contracts. Hopefully that will stand them in good stead going into their first years as pro's because they've already had exposure at senior level.
"Hilliard is particularly pleasing because he came through our Centre of Excellence, he's the first player for a while to come through from the Centre of Excellence's Under 15/16's. Many of our recent players who have made the jump came to us as Youth players after their under 16 year at other clubs, whilst Lewis has come through our ranks, which is particularly pleasing."

Lewis was loaned out to Hemel Hempstead Town at the beginning of the 2009/10 season, in order to gain match experience.
He returned from that loan at the end of December 2009, to rejoin the Diamonds first team squad, but was then sent on loan to Banbury United at the end of January 2010, for a further month. He was released by Rushden & Diamonds at the end of the 2009/10 season.
