Spotted by one of the Rushden & Diamonds scouts at a under-16 county trial in Lincoln, goalkeeper Martyn Margarson signed a scholarship deal with the club in August 2004. After a number of impressive performances for the youth team, he was involved with the reserves on a number of occasions before being sent out on loan in order to gain first team experience.
That exercise paid off when he earned his chance in the Rushden & Diamonds first team, albeit in difficult circumstances, as he made his first team league debut at Stafford Rangers in April 2008 whilst carrying an injury, due a goalkeeping crisis at the time. Following his recovery he was able to make two further league starts before the end of the season, as well as earning the man-of-the-match credit as the Diamonds retained the Hillier Cup in the last game of the season. The club exercised an extension option on his contract for the 2008/09 season, but on 11th September 2008 he was released from that contract to allow him to join Boston United.
