Striker / wide midfielder Neil Cousins signed for Rushden & Diamonds in late December 2008, aged 26. His time with the club has been plagued by injury, most notably a serious knee injury he picked up in an FA Cup game at Brighton during 2009, which has kept him out of the first team reckoning ever since. He remains at the club during his recuperation from this injury.

Cousins started his career in the Essex Senior League with Burnham Ramblers, moving on to Maldon and then BraintreeTown. He joined Heybridge Swifts in 2002, then moving to Billericay in 2004, and returning back to Heybridge in 2005. Cousins spent much of the 2007-08 season sidelined with a lengthy injury, however he then impressed during the early part of the 2008-09 season at the Swifts, scoring six goals in eighteen appearances before joining the Diamonds.

He made his Diamonds debut as a substitute in the Boxing Day game at Stevenage Borough, where he collected an "assist" for his part in the Diamonds consolation goal. He then made his home debut in the return fixture at Nene Park on New Year's Day.

Neil scored his debut goal for the Diamonds in the 2-1 victory over Salisbury City in April 2009.
