Striker Michael Rankine initially signed a one-year contract at Nene Park after impressing former Manager, Paul Hart, during a three-week trial in June 2006. Rankine, who had appeared in the pre-season friendly matches against Nottingham Forest and Reading, was signed from Alfreton Town. The big centre forward was then rewarded with a longer contract for his efforts, and in the 2007/08 season netted 14 times.

In the 2008-09 season he scored nine goals in all competitions, making him the joint-top scorer in that category, although his tally of seven league goals was beaten by three team-mates. The club announced they had taken up a contract option to keep him at the club, shortly after the end of that season, but on 12th June 2009 the club announced he had moved to York City in a player-plus-cash deal that brought Craig Farrell to Nene Park.
