Diamonds beat Newmarket Town 3-1 at Cricket Field Road as the pre-season programme gathers pace.

A goal from Jamie Day right at the end of the first half gave Diamonds the advantage at the break, while Craig Farrell and Nabil Shariff added two more early in the second half to seal the win. Jon Olive pulled one back for the home side with six minutes remaining.

Scheduled as a Youth Team fixture, it was planned to field a mainly youthful side, however the management decided to give a run out to those first team players who had not had much playing time in Devon and triallist Joe Yoffe was also given another opportunity to impress. In fact, only Morgan Phillips and George Artemi from the youth side started the game, although the seven substitutes comprised entirely of 1st and 2nd year scholars.

Diamonds lined up with a back four of Justin Miller, George Artemi, Morgan Phillips and Jamie Day. Max York, Joe Keehan and Max Porter played in midfield, while Nabil Shariff led the attack with Craig Farrell and triallist Joe Yoffe.

Joe Yoffe had a good chance in the opening minutes from a Justin Miller throw, while Joe Keehan and Miller were just off target with long range shots. Miller looked bright going forward in the early stages, and with Jamie Day trying to regain his fitness at left back, it was providing some good attacking play. Day's cross from the left on 20 minutes saw Craig Farrell's effort blocked.

The home side had difficulty creating much in the way of chances, although a free kick just before the half hour mark saw Joe Day mis-punch an attempted clearance, although Jamie Day cleared away any danger.

Diamonds continued to push forward and Farrell came close on a couple of occasions, before Jamie Day had a fierce drive deflected just wide. The goal finally came on 43 minutes, as Nabil Shariff pushed forward down the right. He played the ball back across the penalty area for Jamie Day to drill home from 15 yards.

Just before the break, Jake Gillingwater had replaced Miller in the back four, while Elliot Dent came on for Max Porter during the break. The Jockeys came out strongly and David Grainger forced a good save from Joe Day, while Andy Eady headed over the bar.

Diamonds quickly regained control and Yoffe came close again after a static Newmarket defence appealed for offside. Although he beat the keeper, Eady managed to get back to clear off the line.

The lead was doubled on 55 minutes, after Yoffe was pulled back on the edge of the area. Farrell's free kick found Day, but his effort struck the post. As the ball drifted out to the right, Max York put the ball back into the area, and Craig Farrell slotted home past keeper Robin Mackney.

Both Day and Farrell were immediately withdrawn, with Callum Earls and Liam Read coming off the bench. It was Earls surge forward down the left which led to number three, as he laid the ball inside to Liam Read, who in turn slipped the ball to Nabil Shariff to fire into the corner.

Ben Ekins, Lewis Wilson and Jerry Nash replaced Artemi, Shariff and Keehan with some 15 minutes remaining, leaving only Joe Day, Morgan Phillips, Joe Yoffe and Max York to play out the full 90 minutes.

On 84 minutes, The Ridgeons Premier side got a consolation goal after a long ball forward found Jon Olive racing forward to coolly slot the ball under the advancing Joe Day.
