Justin Edinburgh: A fantastic all-around performance

Posted on: Fri 02 Apr 2010

Justin Edinburgh spoke to Geoff Doyle of BBC Radio Northampton after the 3-0 victory over local rivals Kettering Town on Tuesday evening.

Justin, that was a job very well done.

I thought we started with fireworks up our backsides, and we exploited the space down the sides. There were some good moves going on and we scored a couple of quick fire goals, and then went on to get the third and see out the game with a clean sheet, which was pleasing. It was a fantastic performance.

How important was it to get those early goals, because you're 2-0 up with only 12 minutes gone.

Well I said before the game that we didn't need to win this one, and that the emphasis was on Kettering, and I think that made it better for us as we seem to travel well away from home. We found a lot more space and counter-attacked very well - I thought we did that excellently tonight.

They played Darren Wrack at right back who has been a good player over the years but a little leggy maybe, did you exploit that down that side?

I thought he did a very good job on Lee Tomlin tonight, and that's as good as I've seen Lee handled for a long while. It was a great ball from Craig Farrell for Tommo's goal and he took it brilliantly, but it was probably one of Lee's quietest nights for a while. I was surprised to see Wrack at right back but I think it was a job well done. We've come away from home, had an excellent team performance and I don't think Dale had a lot to do all night and it was a very good performance.

I think the only save he had to make was 4 minutes from the end which you probably wouldn't have thought possible before the game.

No not really, I think there was a lot more passion about this game than the one down at our place. I thought the players rose to the challenge, and to see the supporters behind the goal at the end was a magnificent sight and feeling. They drove the players on and it's great for us to be going home with a 3-0 win.

Another clean sheet, you've now gone to two difficult away matches in the last two games and taken six points from six, you must be thinking you're pretty much they're for the playoffs and that it's in the bag?

No it's not. We've got to make sure we don't get ahead of ourselves and that we don't get arrogant. We've got some tough games coming up on Friday and Monday, and this is where the squad strength will show it's qualities, but if we can continue to keep clean sheets then we'll win games. I can't say that we're in there - we've put a good foot in and put distance between ourselves and Wimbledon in these last two away games. It's a fantastic achievement and I'm proud to be manager of this football club and of this group of players.

A good team performance but I thought Mark Byrne had a good game in midfield.

Outstanding, the amount of work the boy gets through bearing in mind it's his first full season in senior football. I can't praise individuals but he did catch my eye tonight. Shane Huke came on and again I thought he looked composed and confident and Jamie Stuart led by example. It was a fantastic all-around performance.

Two injuries picked up, the first one looked very serious.

Yeah it looks a bad injury and looks like he's torn his hamstring which is a big blow for him, as he's had to work hard to keep his place in the side, and over the last few weeks he's done that tremendously well. For Michael to pick this injury up at this time of the season is a big blow so we'll assess it over the next 24-48 hours and hopefully it's not as bad as we first fear.

And Tomlin's?

He's been carrying a bit of a knock on the knee but the boy just loves playing football and if you tell him he's not going to play he'll sulk like a child, so it's easier just to let him go and play. He does it with a smile on his face and he's a joy to work with, and he'll be fine for Friday.

You'll enjoy tonight Justin.

I certainly will, thank you very much.
