Michael Stone: Sharing goals around is a major plus

Posted on: Fri 19 Mar 2010

How do you get the 8-0 win out of your mind, obviously coming in on Monday and Tuesday, the players would have been pumped but like you say you've got to move onto the next game.

First of all you definitely don't want it out of their mind, you don't want to walk in and say forget about it, it's an achievement by the team against a good side who have won on Tuesday night 3-1 in a big game for the,m so you want them to take away the parts from that game that will give them confidence and build momentum because at this stage of the season that's so huge. But they're professionals and they're a very good squad that know that they now have to think about the next game and that you don't get any bonus points for scoring eight goals in the previous game, so we need to take the confidence and morale and the positive things from that game, store it and add to it now to say we can get better and lets make sure we come back from Altrincham with some points in the bag.

You've had a few 1-0 wins on the bounce, but now with the 8-0 win, the strikers must now think they're on top of their game and can go out and just score at will.

It was a real plus to have seven goalscorers, that was quite unusual in a high scoring game like that, we've also got people at the right end of the goalscoring charts, we haven't got one striker that we're heavily reliant on but having said that we've got Jefferson Louis now on a nice figure of goals, we've got Craig Farrell, Aaron O'Connor, Lee Tomlin obviously so the goals are shared and then we have midfielders popping up like Max Porter, Mark Byrne with useful and important goals and we've shown on set pieces that we've also got defenders capable getting a goal, so the goals are being shared around and that's a major plus as we're not just relying on a striker scoring, we've got midfielders and then we've got defenders willing to cross their position to put the ball in the back of the net, it's a nice trait to have as a team and in all honesty it doesn't matte where the goals come from and if you're stopping them at the other end of the pitch, you've got chances to win football matches.
