Justin Edinburgh: Proud to be their manager

Posted on: Thu 18 Mar 2010

Justin - eight goals, have you ever seen anything like that before in your managerial career?

Only the first game when I took over! - On a serious note, if I'm honest, I let the players know I wasn't particularly impressed with the first half performance. Thought we were a little bit arrogant in the wrong sense really. I think we were a little bit lacklustre, not the normal self, but I got the response that I expected and I thought that second half we were very, very good.

That's the second record you've got then in your managerial career here, with the away victory at Weymouth, that's the highest ever home victory in a Diamonds' colours. That must please you very much.

Of course. I think any record that can be broken should be, certainly with previous managers and teams, that it's a fantastic achievement for a group of players that continuously deliver and exceed all expectations. I can't speak highly enough of them, they're a credit to themselves and I'm proud of being their manager.

Goals spread across the whole of the team today, Jefferson Louis got two, six others got one. Was Simon Downer's at the end an epitome of the whole match?

Well I think so, think it just shows, a little bit of pressure, we're six, seven - nil up and he's even gone and closed the keeper down and he got his rewards. I did think he was going to miss it at one stage!

But listen, I think there was some great goals out there. The passing in the second half was excellent and not going to disrespect Gateshead, but I'm delighted with the score line and eight goals is a good feat really because it could be like an extra point come the end of the season.

I'm delighted for the players because of late, I think a lot people having been saying 'where's your next goal coming from?' when you've had a couple of one - nils, you haven't scored for a while. But I know what this group of players are capable of and they've shown that today.

It sends out that message, doesn't it, to the rest of the league.

Well it does. It's another clean sheet, it's eight goals, and no one's done that to Gateshead this year so it's an excellent result.

It means that players like Craig Farrell can come on, Sam Smith can come on at the end, Curtis Osano, etc. You've got not so much the numbers, you've got the quality in depth to come on, and again, they can score goals like Craig Farrell, fantastic at the end.

Yeah, I think Craig came on and made a statement. He's been disappointed of late that he hasn't played, but he understands that the team have done well, but it's a credit to the players. They're not prepared to go on and just go through the motions, he's come on to make a statement, he's scored a goal, he's set one or two up and I think that shows what kind of spirit we've got at this football club and this group of players are tight knit. They want to do well for one another, not individually, and I think that can take us a long way.
