Max Porter: Happy to be part of winning team

Posted on: Fri 12 Mar 2010

We spoke to Max ahead of Tamworth

Do you think you might end up doing the defensive midfield role on Saturday then?

I don't know, you'd have to ask the gaffer. To be fair in a three man midfield I have played as the holder and then in a two man midfield for Barnet so that could be something he looks at but I think this year it's been more about 4-3-3, it's been more about getting forward and I think in the last couple of games I've had more chances at goal which is what I've been working on, yesterday I had a header and I went through and shot over and Saturday I had a volley which I could have done better with.

Probably goals are the only thing you are really missing then I suppose.

Yeah exactly, I've spoken to the gaffer, I've said I'm disappointed I haven't contributed more but he's just told me to keep doing what I'm doing and add a few little bits and hopefully they'll come.

He must be pleased with your game.

Yeah I hope he is. I think this is the most consistent I've played since I've become full time. Obviously I want to score goals, I've set a little target, which I won't say what it is, hopefully I can add that but I'm just really happy to be part of a winning team this year and hopefully we can keep that going.

You're fourth now and the playoff place looks there now.

We would have taken this at the start of the season, if someone had said this would be the situation going into March we would have bitten their hand off because it's in our hands, we've got to play a few of the teams around us, we're in a great position and we've just got to keep that going and performances like last night show how much it means to us.

Finally a quick word on Saturday about Tamworth, would you expect them to be fairly similar in terms of a battle, maybe try and impose yourselves a bit more.

Yeah I think maybe with eleven men it would be easier but I think they came to our place and played a 4-5-1 so we had to break them down, Tommo scored two great goals and set up the third as well I think.

They seem to like to play a little more don't they?

To be fair to Histon I think even they've changed and started to be play a bit more this year, made a few changes but you can still see that they were quite direct, I think Tamworth will play a little bit more. I think in this league, it is a physical battle, if you get in front then maybe you get to play a little bit more, if you don't then it's going to be a hard day.

You know that if you get that chance to play football, being top scorers away from home, it says it all really.

Yeah I think we're good footballers, we're all players who are comfortable on the ball and we've got some great attacking threats and away from home it does suit us, teams come onto us and then it gives us more space and I think that's shown with the fact we've scored something like four plus goals three times away this season.

But those 1-0 wins are quite nice, you've got to enjoy those.

They're the important ones, they're the tight ones where you nick it and they can make a big difference at the end of the season.
