Rushden & Diamonds v Altrincham
Blue Square Premier
Nene Park, Irthlingborough
Saturday 3rd October 2009 - 15:00
We chatted to Justin Edinburgh ahead of the Altrincham Game
I see Aaron O'Connor is back out there today, is that his first day back of training?
Yeah, he's completed today, so he'll be ok for Saturday barring any disaster or reaction, but he seems pretty positive and hopefully he'll be available for Saturday.
Jamie McGuinness is back from his loan spell
Yep, they've got a load of cup games coming up and we don't want too many people cup tied, we'll assess that over the next week or so as to whether Jamie needs another loan spell or we keep him in and around the first team squad. We've allowed Beecroft to play in the cup, as he's on a 3 month long loan there.
And Joe Day's out on loan
He's playing Saturday, away against Dartford who are top of the League so it's a baptism of fire for him, it's going to be a big game. Joe's at an age where he's only going to develop by playing games, so we've managed to do that, it's a decent level for Joe and we'll assess his progress after the initial month. It's a good standard to be playing first team football at that age, it's a good test for him but one that I'm more than sure he's capable of playing at, I'm sure he'll do very well.
Saturday, Altrincham, they've really turned things around in 18 months or so haven't they?
Yeah they have, they've certainly had an excellent start to the season, they're usually everyone's favourites each year to go down but that shows the resilience that them and their manager has got, fair play to them, they've assembled a good squad over the last couple of years. I don't want to under-estimate them or take them lightly, they've shown with their last couple of results with a late goal at Stevenage last Saturday and they've come from behind on Tuesday night with two late goals, so that shows the spirit of the side and the belief that they have. I'm expecting no difference to Tuesday night, another difficult game. I feel that if we continue to play how we are then we're not far from turning the corner. I think we've been punished at both ends of the pitch really, we've been exposed for two mistakes, one at Crawley and one against Wimbledon, we've been punished and we haven't taken our chances at the other end.
I believe in the strikers, I know that their stats speak for themselves that both Cliff and Faz (Craig Farrell) have scored goals and I foresee that they will start taking their chances. We've paid the price in the last two games for not being ruthless enough and lack of concentration at the other end.
That's the big positive, at least you are creating chances, you know that you can score a lot of goals.
I'll be honest with you, I think that we should have won both games, I'd argue the case with anyone who thinks different. What I can't keep doing is standing here and telling people that that is the case, we've got to prove that.
The stats speak for themselves, we've had the most corners in the league, we had 8 on target and 8 off target on Tuesday night. I think Wimbledon had 2 on and 4 off. Actions speak louder than words. I can't fault the effort, I can't fault the standard of performance since we've been here, but I'm disappointed. It's the first time I've had back to back defeats here as a manager, and certainly as a group of players we want to put that right on Saturday.
You've dropped into the bottom half, but it shows you how tight it is, because it's only off the back of those two results.
We're only 3 points off 5th, we're a quarter of the way through the season now, so I think in terms of those 14 games, in terms of what I've always stated as a manager here that I always want 100%, I think we've had that. I don't think we've had any below par performances, in terms of effort. We may have been able to pass the ball better, or add a little bit more quality, but I think we spoke about at the start of the season. Financially I think I've assembled a very good squad on the budget I've got, our ambitions are still the same, to make sure that come Christmas we are in and around it, I think as we stand now we are, and our objectives haven't changed.
