Justin: The squad has got a good shape, good balance, and the right age

Posted on: Tue 30 Jun 2009

Justin talks to SoccerX in the second instalment of the first part of a new series - Diamonds TV, looking at the news and views from behind the scenes at Nene Park.

In this piece, Justin Edinburgh and Simon Parsell talk about potential signings, The decline of Setanta Sports and Pre-Season Friendlies. You can watch the whole interview here at http://www.soccerx.co.uk/DiamondsTV2.htm

I've had a sneak preview at the provisional squad list and numbers and there's still one spot to fill - the number 5 spot, so there's still a centre half to come in?

Yes, that's the priority now, a left footed centre half if we can get one. I'm in advanced discussions with one, he's an experienced campaigner and I think he certainly will be a player that the crowd will warm to, and will be a leader out there on the pitch. I can't give the name away but hopefully there will be some news soon.

Everyone's been waiting for that one and gradually everyone's seen the team piecing together. With a couple more lads you are bringing in as well, so it seems you've got a decent squad coming together now.

Yep, like you said we've got two more to come in, we're looking to set up a loan situation with two Championship players, if we can pull that off then that'll be a fantastic coup for us and then with the left sided centre half that'll be the final pieces in the jigsaw really. We've got two or three players coming in during pre season that will be here on trial and we'll have a look at them, if they tick the right boxes then we'll bring them on board. All in all the work I've done and the players we've retained, I'm delighted with the squad, it has got good shape to it, good balance and primarily it's got great age about it. With good game experience at this level or higher.

There's a lot going on with Setanta TV and that will impact on our clubs.

I was at Portsmouth when ITV Digital collapsed and I saw the effect it had on League Clubs. There will have been a lot of clubs at this level that have budgeted for that money and that will have an effect.

I think what we will see is the gulf widen between the top half and the bottom teams in the Conference, the seven or eight teams which are very heavily reliant on that money at this level. It's a shame and I hope for everyone involved in football at this level that someone comes in and picks it up, because the viewings on Setanta for the Blue Square Premier were as good as anything on there.

I think it's shown it's great viewing, it has shown it's an exciting league. With the grassroots insight into the dressing room, original things that Setanta have done like that, hopefully someone will come along and rescue it (televised conference games), even if it is not for the original amount, it puts some pennies back into the teams purses.

We've just got to hope that comes about because it is a good package, there are some good games and there's some good football played in this league, there's no doubt about that.

I think so, there's many a manager who has gone into the league above, i.e. Exeter, they've had back to back promotions, so it shows, Morecambe have survived quite comfortably in the League, Dagenham have gone on and just missed out on the playoffs. It shows there's no difference between the second division and this level, hopefully this league will get the coverage it deserves.
