Garry's Post FA Trophy Interview
With me is Garry Hill, bitterly disappointing but you couldn't have asked for any more than that from the players on Saturday.
Well you must have been listening to what I said to the boys after the game, they have given everything and we know in any game of football, certainly cup football, certainly when you start getting to quarter final stages of competitions, and people start thinking about Wembley, there's a very fine dividing line between winning and losing and its about chances. We bossed the game for long periods after the first 15 minutes and saw a goal conceded from set play. Apart from the first 15 minutes for long periods of the match we had a lot of possession, created five or six very very good chances. If we had a little break, or luck, or whatever you want to call it and had taken one or two of those chances we would have own the game, because we were in control of it. But we didn't make the goalkeeper work enough, in respect of saving shots.
We hit the bar and Michael Rankine could have had a hat-trick, David Brown had a great chance with a scissor kick. The game was on a knife-edge as we threw players forwards, and York were always going to hit us on the breakaway. In respect of effort and commitment I couldn't have asked for any more from the players. Good luck to York, I hope they go on to win it now, I mean that because Colin Walker has done very well there.
We threw Chris Hope up front at the end, Rankine was up there, Brown was over there, Challinor was pushing on, we threw everything at them but that's cup football. I thought the game was played in a very good spirit by both sides, even though it was very competitive, it was a game of football played with the utmost respect from both teams towards each other, and played in the right way.
There have been one or two changes of personalities recently, with Charles Adameno starting up front, how did you think he did on Saturday?
I thought he was lively, his pace was causing problems. The balls weren't quite falling for him sometimes, but he's only a young lad, but he's strong and mobile. He isn't quite match fit yet and his hamstring tightened up. He should be okay, but won't feature on Tuesday due to being cup tied anyway, so that gives him more time to prepare for Saturday's game against Woking. He did well along with Michael Corcoran, who did very well, along with the young Goalkeeper. There are a lot of positives but the result is disappointing to everybody, I don't think anybody can walk away saying the players didn't give their all, it was purely a case that we didn't take our chances. On another day we would have buried those and won the game 5-2!
How did the team react after the game? Looking ahead to the Blue Square Premier, Hillier Cup and Setanta Shield
We knew it would be a tough test as they have lost only one in 15, but to get nothing out of the game, not even a replay, meant the players were very disappointed, because we've gone out of the cup.
I explained to them that its another big test now, in respect of our character, we've got some young lads here who have got a bright future ahead of them in the game, and their opportunities will come along.
By the same token we've still got 15 League games to go, we've got the Setanta Shield game against Kidderminster. That's an important game as I said to the players; they mustn't feel sorry for themselves. You've got to be hurt in football, and in life to become a stronger person. That's probably very hard for some of the younger players to take, along with the senior players and staff. I honestly believe that it draws you together closer, and between now and the end of the season, we really want some good performances to build for the future.
