Match Report:  Northampton Town Ladies 1 - 1 Rushden & Diamonds Ladies

(South East Combination)

Rushden & Diamonds Ladies run of seven consecutive wins came to an end when a goal five minutes from time allowed Northampton Town Ladies to salvage a point. Mikaela Welford had put Diamonds in front in first half injury time but late in the game, Lisa Porter fired a shot past keeper Charlene Ward and the ball was scrambled over the line for the equaliser.

An ankle injury meant Caroline Moran was sidelined for the local derby and Anna McLeod started in midfield, while Charly Wright started in preference to Vicky Gallagher.

The game started as a typically scrappy derby fixture with neither side taking control of the game. Some hard tackling meant that it wasn't until some 24 minutes into the game that the first chance was created. Anna McLeod sent a great cross field ball from the left for Aileen Whelan to run into space, but she shot weakly and failed to test the keeper.

Diamonds looked to be getting on top as they started to be more adventurous and Northampton defender Hannah Cave received a yellow card for a rather crude tackle on Whelan just after half an hour. Diamonds thought they had taken the lead from the resultant free kick as Fay Howell sent the ball into the area. The ball was nodded on to Ashley Palmer at the far post, who made no mistake but the linesman's flag went up for offside although the ball appeared to come off the defender.

As the game entered first half injury time, Diamonds had the ball in the net again but this time it counted. McLeod's ball into the area found Mikaela Welford with space to shoot past keeper Serina Milenkovic.

Half time: Northampton Town Ladies 0 - 1 Rushden & Diamonds Ladies

Diamonds looked lively at the start of the second half and had a couple of good chances to increase their lead. Charly Wright tried to lift the ball over the defence with Welford just unable to make contact, while Jade Linnell was just wide with a powerful shot. On 53 minutes, Whelan went on one of her trademark runs into the Northampton area and played a great one-two with Ashley Palmer, but her shot was well saved by the keeper.

Just after the hour, Whelan had another shot on target, but this time it was blocked by Milenkovic in the Northampton goal. With 20 minutes remaining, Mikaela Welford was replaced after taking a knock, with Vicky Gallagher coming on. Diamonds were still on top and Ashley Palmer headed inches wide on 76 minutes from another Howell free kick.

In the final ten minutes however, the home side felt fortunate to be still in the game and tried lobbing the ball forward at every opportunity and on 85 minutes, it was a long high ball that caught out Diamonds. Janine Holland sent in a hopeful ball, and found Lisa Porter with some space on the right. Her shot from a narrow angle beat keeper Charlene Ward and was scrambled over the line as Leanna Doyle tried in vain to get the ball away to safety. Diamonds tried in vain to regain the advantage but the home side held out for the remaining few minutes.

Despite the disappointment of losing two points, Diamonds could be pleased that the home side had so few chances on goal and it was perhaps unfortunate that they were caught out by a long ball which led to their only shot on target. Diamonds and Cobblers will meet again in the County Women's Cup final next month, although the venue and date has yet to be confirmed. Diamonds play their final League game against Bedford Town Bells at the Dog & Duck, Wellingborough Town FC on Sunday 9th March (2pm kick-off), although they still have a League Cup semi-final fixture at Enfield Town later in the month.
