The Danish goalkeeper joined Reading from AD Copenhagen shortly after his 18th birthday in January 2007 as an understudy to Marcus Hahnemann and Adam Federici, and has made a number of appearances on the bench. He went out on a month's loan to Torquay United in February 2008 and following the recall of Dale Roberts by Nottingham Forest, arrived at Nene Park as an emergency seven day loan on 15 April 2008. After initially failing to get clearance for the game at Stafford Rangers, he made his debut against the club he had just left, Torquay United. He returned to Reading on 23 April. On 9 December 2008, Mikkel went out on a 7day emergency loan to Brentford, before another loan spell with Brighton & Hove Albion in March 2009. On 1 September 2009, he joined Bristol Rovers on a half season loan which was later extended until the end of the 2009/2010 season. He started the following season with a similar loan deal with Bristol Rovers and made 19 appearances that season, before returning to Reading, In June 2011, he played for the Danish Under-21's at the European Championships.
