Charles was a product of the Southend United youth system, earning a professional contract at the club. He initially went out on loan to Bishop's Stortford at the start of the 2006/07 season, before going to Cambridge United in January 2007, again on a loan deal. After undergoing a knee operation at the start of the following season, he went out on loan to Welling United in November 2007 for a two month period in order to gain match fitness. He joined Diamonds on 21 February 2008 on loan until the end of the season, but was recalled by Southend United on 30 March 2008. During the 2008-09 season he spent time on loan with Salisbury City, and was released by Southend at the end of that season. He signed for Crawley Town on a permanent basis on 26 May 2009, but left at the end of just the one season despite being their leading goal scorer. On 1 July 2010, he joined relegated Grimsby Town as they prepared for their first season in the Conferemnce.
